Moles

What are Moles?

Moles are also called nevi or melanocytic nevi.  Moles are collections of pigment cells( melanocyts) that clump together in the skin.  Most moles develop after birth although one to two percent of people have moles present at birth.  All Caucasian people develop moles on their body.  African American or Asian may or may not develop moles during their life.

What causes Moles?

Moles develop for a variety of reasons. Some families have large numbers of moles and this is determined by genes. Moles can develop following trauma to the skin particularly sunburns. Studies have shown that strict sun avoidance and sun protection can reduce the number of moles that a person can develop.

WHAT DO MOLES LOOK LIKE?

Moles can vary in size from pinhead size to several inches or more in diameter.  They are often brown or black, but can be flesh colored or red.  They can be flat in the skin or raised above the surface.

ARE MOLES DANGEROUS?

Most moles are not dangerous and do not need to be removed.  However, a mole can turn into a skin cancer called melanoma which can be very dangerous.  The presence of a large number of moles on the body is a risk factor for the development of melanoma.  The danger signs of a melanoma are asymmetry, irregular color, irregular border, or enlargement or change of an existing mole.  In addition, the appearance of a mole that looks different than the other moles on the body –the “ugly duckling sign” can be a warning.

HOW DO I KNOW IF A MOLE IS HARMLESS?

If you are concerned about a mole, the best solution is to schedule an office visit to determine the nature of the lesion.  Dermatologists are specially trained in the diagnosis of skin moles and melanoma.  At times, simple examination of a lesion can be reassuring.  If a lesion is questionable, biopsy and removal are the best options.  We offer mole mapping, a computerized photographic system that helps us to detect any changes over time.  Call 317-846-2396 or contact us.
