WHAT ARE WARTS?
Warts are generally harmless lesions that can affect all ages. Warts are also called verruca. Warts are caused by a virus, the human papilloma virus. Research has shown us that there are actually over 100 different viruses that can cause warts. Warts can develop on any area of the skin.
WHAT DO WARTS LOOK LIKE?
The classic wart is raised off the skin; usually flesh colored, and has roughness on the surface. However, warts can also be flat on the skin, and may look smooth on top
ARE WARTS DANGEROUS?
Generally, no. Almost all people alive are exposed to wart virus many times throughout life. However, research has shown us that some wart virus can cause the development of cancer on the skin, and in other areas of the body such as the cervix and inside the mouth
HOW DO I TREAT A WART?
A number of treatments including freezing, surgical removal, and the use of various creams and injections can be used to remove warts. In many cases, one treatment is sufficient, although warts can be stubborn and require multiple treatments for successful removal.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A WART?
In many cases, the diagnosis is obvious. However, some lesions are more subtle. In addition, some skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma can mimic a wart. A visit to the office can usually determine the nature of the lesion. Please call our office at 317-846-2396 or contact us.
